On the German Autobahn
I took the SL up to Dresden last Wednesday and had a stretch of no-speed-limit, very few cars, German autobahn on the way.
With the top down, side windows up, and rear spoiler up, no wind problem at high speeds.
The engine seems to love speed:
120mph @ 3000 RPM
140mph @ 3800 RPM
A real pleasure to drive at high speed.
I'll miss this kind of experience when I ship the SL back to the States in a couple of months.

I'm so jealous! We did a European Delivery for my wife's 640i GC in Sept and had a blast. The trip of a life time.
They didn't offer ED on SL's in 2003. After our BMW ED, I now dream of having the top down in the SL with the seat heaters on and driving the twisters over the Alps.
Your drive must have been a total blast! Your right about missing the experience stateside. It's just not the same. Of course, stateside driving is not an epic road trip like on an ED. Maybe we'll take the car on a road trip and drive along the Pacific Coast Highway or through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Rockies might be a good option as well.

I wonder what happens to the car during the break-in period when one takes factory delivery and then goes straight on to the autobahn.
A few years ago I purchased a BMW that had been picked up at the factory by the owner of the dealership where I purchased it. Nice car. Car had 700 miles on it; presumably some of that at a high rate of speed.
One month later the main oil seal blew out. And I was following the break-in instructions. Of course it was warranty covered. But......
One wonders.

I wouldn't know.
The run mentioned happened in week 6 of our 4-month trip after we had completed the 1000 mile / max. 85 mph recommended break-in period.
