Exhaust horror

Ever since I got my 63 I have noticed a strange noise.
WELL I have found out what it is. Fellow 63 231 owners, do you realise that
the square exhaust tips are not connected to the exhaust system
The exhaust terminates with a large single oval, this blows on to the square
tips. Basically exhaust comes from partly square tips and around the rear of the car. When I accelerate I get a chuffing, farting sound, like somebody
playing an instrument, it just doesn't sound clean like my 230 SL63.
Has anyone tried joining the tips on, or removing the square tips and fitting round or oval pipes, it may improve performance.

Well, that seems to be the way with all newer designs. Our SL550 and BMW 750 both have exhaust tips that are attached to the bumper, rather than being connected to actual exhaust pipe.

When I saw that on my 2013 SL I could not decide whether to get angry or just laugh at MB.

I decided to laugh. It's "Mickey Mouse" as I always used to say.

But what is their motive for doing the exhaust system this way?? Must be cheaper!?

In last years F1 there was some objections about the way the exhaust was terminated, many people said it sounded wrong and I am sure the exhaust
outlet pipe was blowing through something. Apparently it gave power, so
perhaps this is the reason why our cars are similar, perhaps someone can
throw some light. Mind you, your probably right, done because it's cheaper.
I like the square but only if it is joined to the exhaust instead of just for looks.

I'm not complaining about the design. My SL63 sounds great and the square tips don't accumulate black soot like my old ML63 did. I also suspect that the detached square tip design protects the exhaust system if you get rear ended.

I don't think it's a money saving effort. Given that the exchaust tips are more and more integrated into the bumper design and even completely surrounded tightly by plastic or CF, the tips would get too hot if part of the exhaust.
