My 2015 SL550 European Delivery experience

My wife and I travelled to Sindelfingen last week to pick up our new 2015 SL550. It was a delightful trip and I would recommend that you do it if you can.
The factory tour was amazing; they were churning out 540 S Class per day. Watching the robots fling the body parts around, glue, weld, and move them along, was mesmerizing. There is a lot of engineering behind building these cars.

Driving on the Autobahn and throughout central Europe was fun. It's so nice to see road lane discipline unlike here in the US. We got up to 124MPH (200 KPH) and it was uneventful. There were plenty of people going faster. The only downside is petrol and road fees are exorbitant. Having the navigation system was a lifesaver.

Now we wait the long 13 weeks or so for it to be delivered to our local dealer.

I tallied up a list of all the upgrades over my 2009, and it's quite long:

* Bigger: Longer, wider, taller
* Lighter by 250#
* More legroom. I know the specs are the same, but there’s definitely more room for me.
* Faster 4.5 0-60 / 429 HP / 516 F# vs 5.5 / 382 HP / 391 F#
* Better MPG 18/25 vs 13/21
* ULEV
* 20% more torsional rigidity
* Stylin'
* Panorama sunroof
* Distronic Plus
* Active Lane Keeping
* Active Blind Spot Assist
* Parking Assist
* Pre-SAFE Brake
* Torque Vectoring Brake
* Steer Control
* Shift-by-wire
* Start/Stop
* Belt tensioning
* Dinamica headliner
* Night View Assist Plus with spotlight and pedestrian/animal highlighting
* DRLs
* Soft Close Doors
* Wheel locks
* Hands-free trunk opening
* COMAND wheel
* 7” raised COMAND display plus central display
* Illuminated door sills
* Power wind blocker
* Bluetooth streaming audio
* Music Register
* Frontbass
* HD Radio, Gracenote, SD slot
* Mute button
* Rear camera with guidelines
* Ambient Lighting
* mbrace2
* Nappa leather
* 1.4” more headroom, 1.5” more shoulder room
* 1.3 - 3.3 cu ft (18 - 32%) more cargo room
* Sport steering wheel
* Magic Vision Control
* Adaptive Highbeam
* Attention Assist
* Active Multicontour Seats
* Folding mirrors
* Continuous door hinges
* All-windows control
* Better control placement
* Hold brake
* Electric parking brake
* Digital time and temperature always displayed
* Navigation system improved and updated
* Tilt-away wheel
* NECK-PRO head restraints with no stitching at headrest contact point
* +5 MPH cruise adjustment
* No dings, scratches, glass pits, groans, or squeaky brakes.
* Easier to clean
* Covered under warranty for four years.

The usual 7% off, plus $500 off from the dealer, plus no Destination Charge, plus they didn't charge me for Nappa leather (normally $900). But I had to pay for the trip except the first night's hotel and a couple meals.
