SL/R231: Engine oil consumption
Checked the engine oil - at the bottom of the dipstick?? Took it into Mercedes prior to service and they said it had used 2 litres and that was acceptable. Tolerance was 1 litre per 1,000 miles! (Beyond my tolerance).
What is other users experience? Do I buy shares in Mobile?

Give it a few more miles to bed in and i'm sure the oil consumption will go down a bit.
I think1 liter per 1k miles is normal spec for a lot of cars but most use less.

our old Sl600 didn't. First off, I assume that the oil was a bit low to begin with. Second, the tolerance is normal for a V8 but as stated by the OP, consumption is normally significantly less (up to 95% less than that).
Every engine at high speed will use a lot of engine oil; when driving 150mph in Germany for extended periods of time I would go through a liter a1000km trip.
I checked the oil shortly after delivery - lots of it and nice and clean. I've been running it in, so no red-lining and very little use of the paddle shift.
My Corvette C5 used virtually no oil, even when supercharged and doing 170mph in Germany.
I trust the consumption will improve, I'm just disappointed that I will have to continuously check the levels.
