2017 SL450 Need Help With Dash Symbol....

What is the "Steering Wheel " symbol on the dash trying to tell me. It comes on for a minute or so at random times and then goes off. My manual only shows the symbol with a exclamation point next to it demarcating a problem. My dash symbol is by itself and steering appears just fine. Car only has 350 miles on the odometer. Thanks...

The symbol indicates whether the Distronic Distance Pilot is on or off. Black when off and green when on. Still cannot find the symbol in my manual but finally played with the Distance Pilot accessory today on the road and noticed the change in symbol color when turning the system on and off.

Hmm. The steering wheel symbol is that that. Steering.
When distronic is activated and the lane markings are recognized, the steering wheel turns green. When it is green, the car steers by itself.

All of those features we both named are turned on and off on the same "stalk" left of the steering column so I Am still a bit confused by all the operations. I was able to change the distance to the next vehicle recognized when the symbol was green so I assumed it delt with the distance feature. Thanks for the additional information.

Correct. The stalk activates Distronic plus. The distance sets the car up to the one in front of you. The steering wheel image then turns green when the car can drive by itself and keep the car centered in the lane.

Next time, just let go of the steering wheel

You must have better lane markings in your area. I just tried the system on a major Interstate (I-10) and two state roads with what I consider great markings on the center stripes and lane edges and in all three cases the SL bounced from side to side in the lanes like a drunken sailor was steering and the "put your hands on the wheel" symbol kept illuminating. Active lane assist only functions about 1out of 10 times when I purposely slightly ride the line without using the turn signal. I finally gave up and turned the system off. Maybe I do not understand these functions yet. The distance pilot function worked flawlessly though when I had my hands on the steering wheel.

I had posted about the active steering already so i'd rather not repeat this.
In short, the system works very well in Europe and less so in the US.
But the system will require you to touch and hold the steering wheel every other minute or so. When you don't do that, it will complain and turn itself off.
