I have seen comments where people said it was too quiet - In the UK the only version available is the "AMG Line" and I notice on the order sheet for mine that "sporty engine sound" is one of the items listed!
However, for long distance travel it will be in "comfort" setting and will switch to the sport modes where appropriate - mountain roads, tunnels, showing off etc!

It has a pre-determined trim level and extra's
But the exhaust note is the same!!!

There used to be an "Edition" model. Just been on the MB site - only the AMG line @ £74,340. The retail on what I have bought is ~£10,000 more with all the options I have chosen!!

Uk pricing for the SL is just incredibly low. Even non-discounted. Plus the cheap Pound!
The last black SL400 I drove in Europe (post above) was 114K Euro and it was only mildly spec'd. Not even Keyless Go...

NOT a cheap car Rory..........
But Wolfie makes a valid point that for £54k for an Edition or an AMG with extra's for £62k..........
thats very good value compared to the 114kEuro of the black one he had/hired/leased(???) - which at todays rate would be £99k

Guys, thanks so much for your responses. I've thought about having the ECU modified, but don't like the idea of it always being in jeopardy of being overwritten, when the car is at the dealers, and then having to go to the trouble of sending it back out to be reinitialized. Instead, I'm thinking of going with a Race Chip module. It appears to be about a 5 minute install, by connecting two cannon plugs to the car, and one to the module. According to the Race Chip guys, if it ever fails, the car automatically reverts to normal MB settings. As well, but of less importance, is the fact that the price is about half of what it would cost to reprogram the ECU. Here's a link to Race Chip. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. Thanks in advance.
