R231 Broken Center Console Storage Compartment
This seems to be very common on these vehicles - the rolltop storage behind the center console and roof controls breaks along the track for the rolltop door; it was on my CPO at least.
Unfortunately my CPO has a high-end designo type of leather that is basically unavailable from Mercedes-Benz at this time, so I had the dealer send me a standard black with black threading storage compartment to match the base black leather that most of these cars have:
My stock designo sliding door and cover were still completely intact:
The little sliding door is removable from the bottom of the storage compartment:
Two flexible plastic prongs with rubber nails keep the sliding door from sliding off of its track - these can be gently pried out with pearing knives to remove the sliding door:
Here is the new console piece with my old designo sliding door attached:
Here it is fully-assembled, good-as-new:
You will need to remove the top piece for ease of re-insertion behind the center console; also removal of the auxillary battery upper trim piece and opening of the driver's side storage lid will help; here it is installed:
Reinsertion of the center console piece is very difficult - watch out that you don't snap off the red lights from the fiber optic cables here or you won't get red lighting around where you should.

Great post! The dipstick that installed the window tint on my 2017 SL knelt on my unit and collapsed the sliding door even after I warned him to be careful. Lucky for me, and him, nothing was broken and I was able to manipulate the door back in the tracks and it works as original.

I don't think this is a common issue, but I can see how it can break if somebody applies pressure.
If I have opened this thing more than two-three times in the last 4 years I would be surprised
Helpful post though!
