[help] Driver's side front rear wheel -- rattling sound [like a bearing] then noise

Hi all:

Car has been mechanically perfect. We drove on a very rough gravel road for about 100 yards, and we parked the car [ for our wedding ]. When we drove off, the sound of metal or rock on metal starting shrieking.

We drove a bit further [ no noise under idle ], and the shrieking went away but a noise like bearings going loose started [directly from near the caliper]. it sounds like bearings were going loose. Finally, it sounds like something came off and a pssssssst sound.

We then called a tow truck.

Does anyone have ideas what might have happened?

Thanks,
Ransom

Sounds like a small pebble has become stuck between the caliper and rotor.

I agree with you. There was a sound like air was coming out though. Any ideas where this might have come from? Brake line coming off?

If the hissing sound was from a brake line you would see brake fluid on the ground and the brakes would soon not work as the reservioir emptied. If you have the ABC suspension system that would leak fluid also. Is the sound with the engine running and car at a stop or moving?

thanks, i agree -- i thought it might be the brake line.

no ABC on my car.

i'll check the brake fluid reservoir today.

the sounds only happen when the car is moving.

i checked out a youtube, and it sounds exactly like when gravel is stuck in the rotor... but the hissing sound is what has me confused

Depending what shape and what type of rock might be stuck in the rotor the sound made could be described as hissing sometimes. I've had this happen twice on my pickup truck over the years but was able to put the truck in reverse immediately and the tiny rock apparently popped right out. Yours may be stuck and need to be manually removed.
PS- I hate driving any low slung vehicle on gravel!
