Unfortunately, Palladium Silver Metallic was no longer made available for 231's after the 2015 Model Year, and the Crystal Gray/Dark Gray Interior was dropped by MB after Model Year 2016....

So many good interior and exterior finishes have been dropped by MB

My “Dream SL” is not the one I got, but IMO, I did the best I could with what was available at the time: Polar White—the only glossy, non-black, solid color available—and the Ginger Beige/Espresso Brown interior—the only choice that was not what I call “half black.” It has grown on me, but I would have loved a “Maple Yellow,” or a “Mars Red,” or a “British Racing Green,” instead. Oh well.

So do you like or dislike the red and black?

I much prefer monochromatic interiors or partial two-tone interiors, where the two tones are complimentary. In the R231’s, my favorite color was the two-tone gray, PRIOR TO the face lift. Unfortunately, and for some unknown reason, they only offered that color in the base leather, not the Nappa. And, after the face lift, it became gray & black, which I found much less attractive . I just think the monochromatic interiors look richer, like this gorgeous Bentley, but it’s all personal preference.

What does your 'dream car' SL look like? (231 Series only) look like? Colors?

SL65 (dream car, remember), though I might prefer an SL450 long-term.

With Polar White or Iridium Silver: designo Classic Red, Light Brown, or Sienna Brown, all with CF trim...

Or

With Cardinal Red, or Brilliant Blue: designo Platinum White or Deep White, either with Satin Poplar (w/wheel) or Bamboo.

Also, and this is important, the car should have the AMG 10-spoke rims that come standard on the SL63, not the standard SL65 wheels!

I would be equally thrilled with any of these 14 combinations...

Do you clean your car yourself?
I've just finished doing mine and thought that the time has come to pay some to do it for me......

In my prime I could fully detail 3 cars in a single day. Now I'm tuckered out after completing one. It is still something I enjoy doing and plan to continue as long as I am physically able. I have switched to a spray on sealant that I use after the paint has been thoroughly cleaned and prepared. Also switching to low dust brake pads has made keeping the wheels clean much easier.

Still do it myself, but not as often, and doing it these days takes me longer because I have to take more breaks.....

Still do mine twice a year, full clay bar, wax on, wax off, and like others, my level of production may have diminished, but I still enjoy the task. About every other year I take it to a detail shop for a full wheels off cleaning, fender wells, under the hood, etc.. While my components have progressed, the best results seem to be when I take the time to do a full detail myself.

I was going to clay & use iron remover (3 year old car) but last night had the revelation that I've only done 15,000 miles and teh car has lived in a garage. So no clay, will polish out blemishes with Carlack 68 and then protect with TurtleWax hybrid ceramic. I can take my time and will probably takee 3 or 4 days. Corona virus is now stopping me travelling!

I do, but with less enthusiasm than I had in the past. I did try paying for detailing a few times some years ago but, try as I might, I could not prevent them from slathering "protectant" all over everything. I couldn't convince them that tire rubber and interior surfaces are not supposed to be glossy...so, back to doing it myself.

Yep detailers are a challenge and they all think they have a PHD in chemistry. I hate the stuff they want to slather over the dash and wheels. I was recommended a guy recently and went to look at his workshop which was an absolute mess. My son (he has a Q7 and E53 AMG) uses a mobile guy - I took one look into his van and saw a pile of filthy rags.....not for me. My son replaces his cars every three years and doesn't care as long as they look clean.

I like cleaning the car as it is rewarding but my back hates it.

222 and 231 weekly hand wash and interior detail. Biannual hand clay, polish and, wax. All by someone whom I've used for 20 years and comes to my driveway. To attempt that at my age would be like me trying to scale Everest..LOL I know my place in life. And, admire those who still can do this.
