I did cross-shop those two cars, but when I sat in an R I didn't have enough leg room and so wrote the car off before a test drive. After many fruitless months of searching for an SL450 with ABC, I finally caved and bought a nice example with the standard suspension. I will say that, for me (coming from a lifetime spent in Corvettes), both the ride quality and the handling of my car are a pleasant surprise. It rides and handles better than I expected, and I already expected that the ride would be an improvement. Ride quality is not an issue with the standard suspension. However, my understanding from those on here who do have ABC is that the car will both ride and handle even better with the option. How this all relates to those qualities in the F-Type, I'm sorry...I just can't say.

??? To what are you referring, and what are you trying to say about it?

The intentional growl/exhaust note of the active exhaust F-Types will certainly make it louder. When the top was down on mine, I always had it opened up and it's an awesome song. When the top is up, it was a little too noisy for me so I'd close the flaps in the exhaust. SL is clearly more refined, but F-Type is no slouch. Softer ride in the SL, but the F-Type is not a kidney jarring brute either. IMHO, F-type is more of a sports car, SL more of a sporty cruiser. Wish I could afford both!

Note that a few aftermarket strut mfgs now have mechanical semi active strut replacements and inserts that users say transform comfort levels and handling stability.

No idea if avail for F or SL probably simpler to change tires and play with pressures....

Couldn’t agree more! The R231 SL’s are not sports cars, but luxury grand touring cars. When evaluated as such, they are amazing vehicles. That they can be very quick, are supremely comfortable and have that marvelous, retractable hardtop, is simply the cake, the icing and the cherry on top!

And here I am wanting to switch my SL550 for a GTC since I think it's slow...
Mind you, I am in Canada, where a midsized sedan can be had with over 300 horsepower without being the sport model.

i test drove an F type, v6 version. great car but it was very cramped inside and wasnt as refine as my SL.

that being said your trade would be a downgrade in performance which you might not fancy at the end. i wouldnt buy a v6 sl over your type F R.

unless you you get a v8 sl550 or an sl63 i would say just keep your car unless you dont care about the performance difference but want a way more comfortable refine hardtop convertible. Jag also had almost no trunk space either.and road noiise from the soft top
