To answer your question; of course they can but these pucks are helpful/needed when you raise a single corner. No damage or marking of the side skirts, undercarriage or potential slippage. Most modern cars have these. Cheap and they work great. Here is where we got our from:

So got the puck for the jack. So the rectangle part only goes into the specified location on the
car about maybe 1/2 an inch. Is that how it's supposed to work?

Give or take. It just needs to snap in straight. The pressure from the jack will do the rest...

How does a hockey puck work without the rectangular part? (I'm a product of '70s Boston; I have plenty of hockey pucks....)

If you are a DYI guy, don't be cheap and get the right stuff. The rectangular part is what makes it non-slip.

Not sure what one has to do with the other but I am happy for your success
Of course you can put the car on bricks as well. I spent $40 to reduce the risk for damage. All a question of personal comfort level...

oh, I agree Wolfman; looking at the photo (below) at the website you shared it looks like the rectangular part is the most important part. I'm not sure how a hockey puck would work. I'm not a DIY type with regard to wheels and tires but as I stated before, my tire shop uses floor jacks in an outdoor lot. That website sells this item for the W203, W211 and W209 as well, all models I've had tire work done on at this shop, all without issues, but given how much lower the SL sits the $40 seems like a good idea....

For those that don’t want to use a hockey puck for that next oil change.....
