I believe that is the button that is an internal emergency release for the trunk lid in the event you could accidentally lock yourself in.

When the top is down there seems to be no access to the luggage compartment inside the trunk. However, using the button you referred to actually raises the stowed top vertically enough to allow access to the trunk storage compartment. The purpose of the button therefore is to allow the placement or removal of luggage when the the top is down and stowed in the trunk.. Push the button a 2nd time and the stowed top will be lowered back to it's normal stowed-in-the-trunk position.
