Some of that is done to avoid a reflection on the windshield. When specing a Porsche they warn you about that. Bentley also. I can see Mercedes being the one that doesn't want the headache of people complaining about glare/reflection from a lighter colored dashboard. I say warm the customer and let them order what they want.

They are quite handy. I don't have to slam my door shut, they sound great, and if I or someone else forget to shut my door fully, the car does the rest for me!

I don't have to "slam" the doors on either of my 2017 Chevy DDs. I just have to get them barely moving toward closed, and they coast shut quietly and reliably every time. I'm sure the doors on a modern SL are no different, so why would I want to needlessly complicate the process by adding expense and...well...complication. When I can no longer reliably close a car door without the car's help, I'll gladly hand in my license. JMO.
