SL/R231: SL News

With all the complaints about a harsher ride and cracked rims I am baffled why car manufacturers are hell bent on larger and larger rims.....
P.S.- I like the new Saddle Brown Matte paint color!
If the clay model is true to production then the huge amount of SL in front of the front wheels is gone which many have complained about on the 231.

That sure looks like a 2-seat, retractable hardtop to me. Well, at second glance, perhaps not. That rear deck is very short. Hmmm.

Below is a 'CLICKABLE LINK' to view the short Video:that supposedly shows the 'Next Generation' SL that is coming in 2021 as a 2022 model. However, is this really something 'close' to next SL, or it merely a 'Concept Car Exercise' leaked out intentionally just to see how the public reacts to MB's styling ideas for possible future vehicle(s)? The 'finished' Blue Convertible in the video does NOT appear to be an SL, but possibly some future AMG GT...
However, the Clay Model does indeed appear to be an SL! (The rear lights and the grille on the Clay mock-up are clearly an SL design). Interestingly, the Clay model also appears to be an SL 'Coupe' which may be coming a bit later on. However, we are still expecting a Soft Top Convertible as the first new generation SL arriving in 2021..

Since it is not possible to make a clay folding top on a model the roof still may be planned as a soft top and just removes on the model to show the appearance of the car with the roof down.

The link and info is wrong. This was presumably the next AMG GT model. The clay model is clearly a coupe...
I would still like a grill.
The timing is correct though. MY22 introduced in 21.
So the R231 will likely finish in 2020 with no MY21 and will blowout the remaining inventory.

It's an AMG GT. The roof has a double-bubble design and the rear glass is a hatch. That is NOT an SL.

Suggest that you TAKE ANOTHER LOOK at the video!
Yes, the 'finished' Car (The Blue Convertible) is most likely a future AMG GT Convertible, (or perhaps just a 'Concept Car')
However, the Tail Lights and Lower Grille shown on THE CLAY MODEL in the video appear to be taken from the 'current' SL Class. You can also see the SL's lower grille in the 'still pics' of the Clay Model. (It's certainly NOT the AMG GT grille).
The Clay Model shown just 'may' be our first 'hint' as to the general shape of next generation SL, and also 'a clue' that a SL 'Coupe' is also in the works! . However, if indeed that is the case, the Coupe version of the SL would probably come sometime 'after' the expected 2021 announcement of the SL Soft Top Convertible. Time will tell!

No need to look for "hints". It is a known fact that the next SL will be based on the next gen. AMG GT platform and be introduced in 2021. The issue with the article is that it is wrong. The Clay model depicted is a standard coupe. By the looks of it a next. gen. AMG GT, not SL. The cars will share the platform, not the same body.

Before MB started calling their interior colors with two names, such as “Ginger Beige/Espresso Brown,” they had some truly lovely interiors. Here is my 2004 SL500 with “Ash” leather. Notice how the dash and other panels are a darker gray and the carpets are color coordinated. To me, this is the way interiors should still look, but with the exception of the beige/brown, every SL interior is /Black. I believe they did this as a cost cutting measure, which is truly sad on a $100K+ “halo” car.

Absolutely! I think your interior was “THE” best color available on the R231’s, so of course, they changed it. I think it was in 2017, when all the darker gray panels were changed to black, turning this amazingly beautiful interior into something much less attractive. Nobody can tell me that the move wasn’t a cost cutting measure, which is just so petty and ridiculous on a high end car like this. How they allowed the Espresso Brown to remain with the Ginger Beige is mystery to me, but I’m glad they did.

OMG Valiant? How did your reconcile that in your marriage? Kidding, but the Valiant was something of an afterthought. We drag raced a 1961 Valiant with a Hemi, a Sox & Martin tranny, and 90/10 shocks. Went like stink in a straight line, but little else.

Wife's Valiant was also a '61. She drove it in high school and college 1966-1973. Interesting that she was from Burlington, NC which I believe is where Sox and Martin were headquartered. She blew up the engine driving from Charlotte to Burlington when it overheated and she kept driving until the engine seized. It was a slant six with 3 on the tree.
