Exhaust Options for Facelift SL 550

As I said in my previous post, I am starting the quest for an exhaust upgrade for my 2017 SL550. I have scoured the forums, and YouTube, and virtually every nook and cranny of the Interwebs looking for info about the relationship between the facelift exhaust 550 and the facelift AMG63 exhaust as I find that exhaust absolutely intoxicating.

While I know it’s two different engines and two different clientele, and the cars will never sound identical, I would like to clone that marvelous sound. But can anybody be confirm how much of the AMG system can be easily transferred to the 550? What can and can’t be done? And has anyone done it that would like to share their experience?

As an additional point, what impact does the new valved exhaust system on the facelift 550 have on the equation? Where are they located, and how does replacing the forward mounted resonators, intermediate pipes, or rear mufflers affect the sound? I ask this in thinking about Renntech and other aftermarket options and wondering how the new (louder) sport and sport plus modes will have on aftermarket cans.

i have no problem tearing into and replacing things in a sequential fashion to get to the sound I want - but I would love some more information from those that have been there and done that. I have the full schematics on both exhausts - but would love some advice on where to start.

Thanks in advance!

I bought a CPO 2013 SL550 a few years ago. I was able to contact the previous owner and he confirmed that he had swapped out the resonators for SL63 units. It would start with a bit of a rumble. Easy driving would not sound much different than stock, but put your foot in it and it would ROAR! There are some posts here from a fellow who deleted the resonators altogether. Too loud for me, but I believe he was happy with it.

Thanks - so do you know if he just changed the rear mufflers or resonators? The SL 63 has a more traditional appearing dual high flow cat system that dumps into an h/x pipe design, and only rear mufflers/resonators. Our SL 550s look to have a split exhaust system, not true parallel pipes, with front and rear resonators/mufflers and no xpipe. Just wondering which part(s) he swapped.

I’m not really up on these systems. I just knew that the car was louder and asked why. His reply was that the resonators were changed. We left it at that. He did say it cost him about $3,000.00 parts & labor.
