SL/R231 Trunk strut part numbers

Trunk strut part numbers

Hi,

I wonder if anyone knows where to find the difference between the 4 different trunk struts that apparently exist for the R231.

I have the typical problem of the trunk not staying up in cold weather. I replaced the struts with 2 new ones (part number 231-980-04-64) - these were the same ones as the ones I replaced. - Now I have added a spoiler to my trunk lid, so It is heavier than it was from the factory, and that would probably explain why the new struts cant keep it open either.

Doing a little research, there are 3 other versions for the R231, part numbers 231-980-03-64; 231-980-02-64 and 231-980-01-64. Does anyone know what the difference is between the 4, or where to look it up?

There are 4 gas struts listed for the R231 SL:

A2319800364
A2319800464
A2319800564

I used the SL 500 / SL 550 231.473 as my basis, I believe the other models should share the same part configuration but have not checked that to verify it. To check what options are present on your car, you can see the VeDok datacard by submitting your VIN to a website like Lastvin or asking your local dealer's parts department. The following are the relevant car option codes you would need to look for:

[881] "REMOTE TRUNK LOCKING"
[09T] "CARBON-REINFORCED PLASTIC INSIDE PART OF TRUNK LID"
[U47] "SPOILER LIP"
[U93] "CARBON SPOILER LIP"
[773] "AMG EXTERIOR CARBON PACKAGE"
[P30] "SPECIAL MODEL SILVER ARROW EDITION"
[P93] "SPECIAL MODEL MILLE MIGLIA"

-ve signs below mean a car without that option, +ve signs with with.
