Believe it or not, there are now (2) MORE 2020 SL 450's with ABC, (aka 'UNICORNS'), available for sale!....A Selenite Grey Metallic one in Ohio, and a 2nd White one in California, (This one is Polar White, not Diamond White like the 1st one mentioned in Post #22)....

I was surprised to see even (1) with ABC for sale, and absolutely 'shocked' to find (3) of these 'Unicorns' for sale now!....

Click on the links below to see the latest (2) listings!....

Note: both listings show pics of the ABC Buttons on the Center Console!...You can also see that both these cars have the optional Wood/Leather Steering Wheel as well!....

** 2nd of 3 - (Ohio) - Grey with Porcelain Interior - This one appears to have Magic Sky as well!...
https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...ckType=listing

** 3rd of 3 - (California) - Polar White with Porcelain Interior (Can't tell for sure if it has Magic Sky, but the price certainly indicates that it most likely does)...

Well, that white one pretty much has every option. I wonder why the dealers won't order either of the two other whiter interiors...it's always Porcelain. Also, is it just me, or does the color of the Poplar on the steering wheel look darker than the dash...more like the color of Burl Walnut?

Steering wheel is darker. It used to be very common to significant wood mismatches in the old days (strangely enough often on the highest-end 600 models). It happens rarely now. You could likely request the dealer to swap the wheel; they may make up some defect to process the swap under warranty.

Still a very nice car. Glad to see more well optioned cars

MB is probably adding ABC to some of the last 231’s to use up parts they won’t be using on the 232’s! 😊

MB better save some parts as I/we who intend to keep the car will need them in the future.

I'm surprised that steering wheel even made it onto the car in the first place. What happened to "Mercedes Quality"? I wonder how much wiggle room they actually have in the price at a time like this. This car has options (B&O Sound, Magic Sky, Soft Close Doors, Illuminated Sills) that I would never have ordered and so am unwilling to pay for...part of the reason being that there are a couple of '17 SL 63 cream puffs available out there with similar equipment in the low-80-to-mid-90 k$ range. Yeah, I'd rather have a 450, but my personal situation dictates that at some point I may also have to consider depreciation...which is bound to be a bit less on a four-year-old 63 than on a brand new 450. That is, unless the dealer is willing to eat a meaningful amount of it up front.

Are you really serious about getting a SL?
There appears to be something wrong with every SL brought up no matter how it is configured.

Every dealer wants to make a deal but at this point they will blow you off..MBFS has given them at least a 90 days payment reprieve on their inventory without repercussions. So no need to move cars at blow out prices. Good deals, sure. Plus with factories closed they will not be flooded with more inventory either.
SL’s are also less likely to be heavily discounted before summer and with no successor in sight.

If you are cheap and want expensive options but don’t want to pay for them, you can only buy used. No alternative. They will not be given away.

Yeah, I was afraid that would come off as "whiney" as soon as I hit send. Just here, in this thread, I've realized that for me, the time to be considering a new SL has past. No dealer will have ordered anything close enough to what I would have ordered. My only hope now is that someone ordered something close a few years ago and it will be showing up soon as a CPO. Over in the "what's your dream SL" thread, I counted 14 different color/interior combinations that I could be happy with, so that shouldn't be an issue...it's finding a 450 with ABC and an upgraded interior that's really tough.

Thanks for this. It contributed to the conclusion that I've reached (see above).

Though I'm really not that cheap, there are a lot of expensive options that I don't want. Thanks in part to you guys, I'm sticking to the CPO route from here on out.

Do you think that MBFS will sweeten their incentives, leases or financing rates in the coming months? Seems that some of the US mfg's are doing so in light of softening sales because of Covid-19.

Yes. I am certain they will. For one due to lowered interest rates and to create buyer incentives. Even though MBFS has helped dealers in lowering costs of inventory in the short terms, they still need to sell cars to make money. So they have to sweeten the pie.
What is uncertain is just how long the situation will persist and how deep/prolonged a recession will be.

What is different from all previous scenarios is that manufacturers never had a total shut down of their plants (nearly) everywhere. While bad this helps to minimize excess inventories.

The UK has always been ridiculous with their discounts (in a good way for them).
I remember another UK member got a significant discount on a facelifted SL450 (maybe 20%) before that car was even available here in the US.

The Canadian market is somewhat the same way, AMG’s costs a fraction of what they are selling here.

Yes - I got a massive discount on mine (facelift 400/450) . ~25% but I negotiated it. The MB site has a 78K car on offer for ~58K.

Any news/indications when MB will reopen the plants in Germany? I have an SL which was due to be built the first two weeks in April and delivered the end of April/first part of May. Looks like a June/July delivery now.....if then.

No ABC on this one, but what an especially lovely Brilliant Blue/Porcelain Designo Edition of the SL 450 this one is!....

This has the Exclusive Nappa Porcelain Designo Interior and note that 1 of the 36 pics shows the Magic Sky Roof Option! Also has the unique exterior Designo Accents, (Chrome accents on lower grille, White Piano Lacquer trim to include the steering wheel). Finally ;checkout those expensive 10-spoke AMG 19/20 Forged Wheels, and not the Driver Assist Package is there as well!...

A rare find indeed!....
Certified Pre-owned with just 6551 miles and located in Pennsylvania.......

So are you still shopping for 'a very special 2017 CPO', Dr Manhattan?.......... Might this one do?....

Though it lacks ABC like the other (3) posted earlier, it's certainly a very stunning 'special edition' isn't it?....

Just trying to find a bit more car 'beauty' to help ease the stress, depression, and boredom of this dreaded Covid-19 crisis which, sadly, isn't likely to end anytime soon!....

Listening to some good music also helps!....

Of course, there are some very nice SL 550's with ABC available as well, such as the (2) Silver 2017 models shown in the listings below!....The one in the first listing has just 4727 miles.....

So, are you really still searching for a 231 with all the right options, and at the right price, Dr Manhattan?....
Clearly, there are some excellent 231 choices available right now in both the 450 V6 and the 550 V8!....

The more powerful 550 Twin Turbo V8 remains the engine of choice for me, but as always, YMMV applies!.....

A R231 steering wheel is quite straight forwards to swap. The parts cost for a leather & wood model is around ~$/€/£ 1XXX itself, and it can be done yourself in 15mins if you have a torque wrench.

Point the car wheels exactly straight, and then disconnect the main battery & leave to sit for 10 mins, to ensure any airbag capacitor is discharged. Punch through both the side "dimples" in the leather and insert a flat bladed screwdriver to release the clips that retain the airbag module, unplug and remove. Undo the large torx bolt on the steering column, and mark the exact vertical location of the steering column with a marker. Pull off the old wheel and transfer the buttons and chrome trim to the replacement using a philips head screwdriver. Attach the replacement making sure that the steering column has not moved out of position, and tighten the steering column bolt firmly as per specification with a torque wrench. Plug in the airbag module, then insert it into the wheel until you hear a firm click.
