SL/R231: 2017 SL - Front and Rear Camera Install
I wanted to make things as clean as possible. I opened up the SL Electronic WAIS manual an started looking for 112 switched power in the overhead console. That was a comedy act. I couldn't follow which way the electrical diagrams were going.
I tapped into the 12v supply going to the passenger map light. The camera uses 5v power supply. You can't just tap into the power supply you need to add a 12v to 5v DC convertor - Amazon has plenty of tiny ones to choose from that fit inside the overhead console cover.
I cut all the supplied wires to make them shorter. If you are a gadget guy who likes to do stuff like this - The camera uses an 8 pin Min USB cable -- Most MINI USB cables are 5 pin. So make sure you have the right cables before you start cutting USB cables apart. I purchased a set of Right Angle Min USB cables off Amazon. I could only use that for the Power input. I couldn't find an 8 pin Right angle for the connection to the rear camera.
Front Camera - Rear Camera - 12v to 5v Convertor - Custom short connectors
So that's all the pieces we are going to install in the car.
Now let's find the electrical supply.
The cover for the overhead console just pulls straight down. Then takes a little manuevering to get it off around the rear view mirror. The rear view mirror can be removed with just the twist of a wrench - but I didn't want to disconnect too much stuff.
Now on the back of the sunglass holder there are 4 or 5 molex connectors plugged in. For our project we only need the one closest to the driver -- Which Benz was kind enough to make burgundy colored. A push down on the Molex tab and a slight pull toward the hood and the Molex comes out. There are 2 wire ties holding several wire groups together. I cut those so I could have some room to pull the burgundy plug out to work with it.
The red and yellow wire is the one we want to tap into.
I pulled the red and yellow pin from the Molex plug. Added my red wire to the pin connection and then locked the pin backinto the plug.
I wire tied my new wire (red one) to the bundle and I was done. For the ground connector I took the easy way out. There is a big metal spring that holds the overhead console computer against the windsheid. I stripped my ground wire, removed the spring, wrapped my ground around the spring and then reinstalled the spring.
I took the dremel and made a notch in the over head console cover for the wires to pass thru. This isn't necessary - there is enough room - but I wanted to try and keep it clean.
All my wires installed behind cover.
Buttoned back up
The wires are in place for the rear camera. I plan to mount the rear facing camera on the over head console - Perhaps to the bottom of the sunglass door. But I am going to paint it off white to match the interior before installing it.
Pretty straight forward project. Doesn't take a whole lot of skill - Just a little patience with the soldering iron.
