SL/R231: R231 boot catch issues

R231 boot catch issues
Hello,
I have a 2013 SL350 R321 which has developed an issue with the boot mechanism.
When you shut the boot down it doesn't soft close, you have to press the internal button and then press down firmly to get it to shut. It never closes fully now it always part closes anf you have to play with it and open and slam it for 5 mins until you get it to shut.
I took it to a mb dealer through Warrenty and he diagnosed the issue as the locking mechanism, and said I needed a new boot latch and assembly. Long story short obviously the Warrenty didn't cover this part and the £500 quid for the latch seemed excessive so I thought I'd do it myself. I bought a second hand part on ebay for £100 which I fitted today and low and behold its exactly the same.
Obviously that latch could again be faulty however I really don't think it's down to that, there are very few posts regarding this specific issue so it would be great if anyone has the answer.
