Apple CarPlay started with 2017 models. Before there is no way unless willing to install a 3rd party adapter like Joye Auto and similar. While they offer even wireless CarPlay, the install and/or quality is not for everyone. Hit and miss

2013 SL550 RENNtech ECU / exhaust / intercooler upgraded
I can speak to the JoyeAuto module/adapter. I purchased the module online at their website for $395 plus $20 shipping via DHL. During the purchase, to be sure I was purchasing the correct interface module (I have a early 2013 production car) I actually spoke to one of their sales techs via their online IM to confirm all my car and VIN info. Took about 2 weeks to get the module delivered (yes, came directly from China). I took it to a professional stereo shop for installation - installation was $1,200 but I also had the rear speaker fix done at the same time (2 under-seat JBL BassPro SL 8-inch subs, Alpine KPT-445U 4 Channel Amp, and AudioControl LC2i 2 channel line out converter). Anyway, I'm really happy with the installation and the ability to now have Apple Car-Play in the car. Its interface to the head-unit is both Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and/or UBS tethered (stereo shop installed the UBS port next to the existing port in the center console). Only drawback is that I wish we had touch screens as you need to use the control knob (as we do for most things) to move/switch through the apps.

It will still require a coding of AUX, which is included in the price and will be done remotely.
2016 models (with NTG 5.1) support CarPlay natively but the firmware is outdated. This can be solved with coding only, check this page for 2016 models: https://www.mbhouse.ca/store/carplay-activation.html
