Rearview mirror fell off

Hello Guys
Need help. Rearview mirror fell off with a piece of glass it was attached to. Anyone knows what to do or had similar problems? See pics attached
Also mirror itself is super hard to adjust. Any way to loosen it? It fell off when i was trying to adjust originally.

Broke off seems to be a better word for it. Sorry to hear!

Looks like you broke the inside glass layer of the windshield. At this point all bets are off. Super-glue for glass or similar? The rearview mirror has very limited adjustably according to our SA. A number of years ago, a tech broke the windshield of our few months old 2017 SL when trying to remove a dashcam in order to adjust A-pillar hardtop lock. They also installed a new rearview mirror which was extremely stiff. They disassembled the mirror to loosen the screws but it remained stiffer than normal for several months...

OMG...I was trying to figure out what I was looking at in the photos, when you said this! Automotive windshields are very complex constructions. We tend to think of them as simply curved sheets of glass, but they are built-up laminations of at least three layers, and that process involves pressure and heat. Sometimes there is residual stress left in them after they cool. I used to work in the final assembly area of an auto plant, and occasionally a windshield would explode all by itself as a car was passing down the assembly line, just from that residual stress. I've never witnessed such a localized de-laminating that would allow for this to occur, though. Amazing...

I think I'd give some epoxy a try before paying for a new windshield, though. There's no way to hurt it now.

I can't believe I see this on a Mercedes, their supplier quality control probably went to the toilet, I would be surprised if they outsource that windshield in Germany....Every OEM manufacturer has a Supplier Quality Control Dept. maybe Mercedes is reducing overhead from that area...

You are a bit quick to blame Mercedes. This is not a QC issue, this is an issue of force being applied and the glue proving to be stronger than the glass. Nothing unusual about this. Quite common actually when metal is bonded to glass...

Unfortunately there may be a new windshield in the OPs future...

Before doing anything, I’d visit a local car glass shop and see what they might be able to do to reattach the mirror.
These windshield guys are experts at what they do and will have access to the knowledge as well as the best products (if any) to reattach your mirror.
I’d bet that, assuming they can help you, the cost would be minimal. Worth a shot.

Think you need a uv setting glass glue - that is probably what stuck th mirror on in the first place

The glass guy is right, I’ve been there and tried that. It didn’t work.
Go, with your car, to a glass shop or your MB dealer and see if they will do it for you. I’d start with a glass shop.

Well, maybe is a design issue, anyway it should not happen on a Mercedes....

You mean the OP applying force on a glued-on rear view mirror on an 8 year old windshield and damaging it is a design issue?

A better question is how many other SL owners have had this same issue?

I'm with Wolfman on this one. This is such a bizarre failure. The windshield doesn't know it was in a Mercedes...it was just force and physics. I just hope he can resolve the problem without a new windshield...

I also hope that a new windshield isn’t needed but once glass breaks there will be diminished strength in the area.
If the OP can dismantle the mirror and lubricate/loosen the the ball joint so that the mirror is easily adjustable, it may work.
