ECO Start question

Is there a way on a 2013 to set the default to off for the eco start?

Thank you

My understanding is, negative unless you use an aftermarket unit that plugs into the OBD socket and reprograms the ECU.

I have gone the obd2 plug route however i think there is a smarttop module for more that also enables it with great other features

That would be this.
Lots of top, window, and lock functions — but also can disable ECO Stop/Start automatically. Installation is allegedly not difficult in the sense that it doesn't require special tools or skills, but is a bit fiddly and takes some time if it's the first time you've ripped your trunk apart. :-)

i considered this however as much as i like 1 push top open and close while on the move i didnt feel that’d be the safest thing. I mean an accidental push while trying to push window switch right there and your top goes open .

i dont mind pulling over to close and open the top.

I've often wondered if the ECO switch could be hard wired as if it were pushed in or selected as OFF.

That is really a non issue........I've had STs in cars for 8 years and never accidentally activated the roof while driving (or, for that matter, while stationary) ......my SLK was a daily driver for 4 years and I did a lot of miles in it.

1) You can set the road speed limited to 40km/h max for open/close (mine is about 20)
2) It does not work via the window switch and cannot be set to do so.
3) You still need to press (or pull) and hold the big lever (maybe a second or so) so accidental is highly unlikely
4) It bings to warn you & tells you on the console display so you could reverse your action if you did somehow activate the lever.
5) The roof switch is hidden under the cover....would have to be a very intentional move to go in there it to use the "all windows button" and activate the roof instead
6) The lever is also a different shape (as in aircraft - some switches and levers eg flaps are flat, landing gear are round like wheels), for a tactile awareness
7) and in-spite of all the above, if you did manage to somehow start the roof moving, it is pretty slow you could easily stop it.......

Treat yourself and get a ST. There are about a dozen other useful features with become available with a ST.

I see the trunk needs to taken apart nothing that complicated and the module does have a lot of nice features

Correct. Installing it is just a PIA pulling back the trunk liner to get enough room to plug in the three (?) connectors and routing the USB cable (used for firmware updates). Once installed, it is really nice and simple to use.

I'f you are half handy with some basic tools it is a very simple installation. I installed mine in both my SLK and SL when they (cars) were still brand new and under warranty. Read teh instructions, follow they step by step and it is no problem. Biggest issue for me was bending over into the boot (trunk) as I have back troubles.

The biggest benefit for me is to not have to stand near the car while I open/close the roof.

No it does not.

It is triggered when you start the car but if you change modes while driving then ECO comes back on. So if activated to turn off ECO in the setup, the car will always start with ECO off. From the manual.........

great to see they added that in the firmware, I have been asked to change that many many times, not on R231, but that was the only usual method

SmartTop was less than 30 minute install. It was very straight forward and it's basically unplugging 2 things and plugging a connector between the 2 plugs. This is a great investment in my opinion. I hate the Eco-start 'feature' and am so glad to be rid of it. I also like being able to put windows down or top down/up while walking to or from the car. Especially on hot days.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this gadget to anyoone. The bevy of little convenience features are really nice.

As for putting the top up/down by accident. There is no accident to opening the console and pulling up the roof lever at freeway speeds.

Now is they could disable the "P" button under the shifter at any speed for 5mph that would be awesome. I have 3 lil dogs and one of them seems to aim for that P button everytime she goes from one side of the car to the other!

I just purchased the Launch Creader Elite v2.0 for $145 CDN. It allowed me to disable the Eco Start/Stop for my 2019 SL450.
The sequence to make the change was different than some of the other instructional posts I've read:
