Sanding door sills look brushed

I am sure someone else has covered this, but I cannot believe they made these shiny. I tried a couple of different ways to accomplish this, but the easiest seems to be 80 grit or rougher sandpaper sponges, for lack of a better term. These are the roughest I could find, but a step up might help. I don't think pics would do it justice, and apologies for not taking pictures, but I am really pleased with how it turned out.

I taped off the plastic parts and used the 80 followed by 120.

They scratch so easy even with soft soled shoes. Not a great idea. A harder metal would have been nice.

Did you move the sponges in circles or straight lines?
