Advice regarding Winter tyres/wheels

Advice required
I have a 2017 SL400 and I want to run a second set of wheels with winter tyres. My MB dealer has quoted me 30 minutes labour (£90+vat) to program the new tyre pressure sensors to the ECU.
My question is this, when I swap the wheels back in the spring, will I need to revisit the dealers to have the ECU programmed back to the original wheels or with the ECU remember both sets?
I don’t want to have to revisit the dealership every time I swap the wheels around.
thanks for any advice.

When I bought my second set of wheels and all-season non-runflat tires, there was no need to visit the dealer. The TPMS worked fine after the swap out was done at Discount Tire, which sold me the entire package..

Yes, you need to move to the US and buy your tire (or tyre)/wheel package from TireRack.com with the sensors installed. I did this with my 2014 C350 last year and the sensors synchronized automatically. You may need to drive the car a bit, but they should automatically sync.

Ditto the above response. The wheel/tire package I got from TireRack included TPM sensors that work seamlessly with the Mercedes system. All you have to do is re-initialize the TPM system, which is easy to do (as described in the owner's manual on my SL550). That might be what the dealer is describing, although the process takes only a minute or so inside the car, plus 5 minutes or less of driving.

Conceivably the dealer used a sensor that does have to be programmed in some way to make it compatible with your car's TPM system, but I doubt it. If so, it should remain so programmed, and neither your original wheel sensors or the winter tire sensors should need any reprogramming.

My advice would be to ask your dealer if he's referring to the regular re-initialization that is always done when you get new tires, repair a tire, raise/lower tire pressures, or swap to a different set of wheels and tires. If so, that's something you can do easily and save the dealer's charge.
