SL/R231: VRTune Stage 2
Measure Gains from "chipping"? - MBWorld.org Forums
I talked about the felt gains from my VRTune (Vivid Racing) Stage 1 tune and how it transformed my fun SL400 into a funner (bad grammar intended) car by bumping the hp to around 390hp. I just upgraded to the Stage 2 which added another 30hp bringing the total to a claimed 420hp. Now my car is really more funner! (Again, bad grammar intended.). Stage 2 does not require any special gas usage (other that the minimum required), exhaust mods, or intake mods. The car is a real sleeper now since I left the SL400 badge on the trunk lid.
Regarding the tune, this is what Vivid Racing told me:
To answer your question regarding boost pressure, when tuning a Mercedes the software/ECU calls for torque as a way to set maximum boost pressure, meaning we are not setting a specific boost pressure for any of your vehicle's tune files and instead are controlling boost via torque limiters. This means that your Mercedes will build boost until hitting this torque threshold, and then level/even off so to speak. To clarify, because of your vehicle's OEM configuration, our stage 2 tuning for your vehicle will see a 1-2PSI max boost pressure increase at the very most.

Regarding stage 2 tuning for a stock vehicle, please keep in mind that we typically only recommend stage 2 tuning to vehicle's that are almost exclusively used for track/weekend driving, as the adjustments we make to your throttle response and torque limiters can make daily driving uncomfortable. However, you are correct and we can complete this regardless of the modifications your vehicle has installed.
Personally, I can feel slight surging when driving at a slow speed, like coasting to a traffic light. But, I am very sensitive to how my car drives, etc., so a passenger may not notice. When driving at speeds above 10-15 mph, I cannot feel any surge. Unless I told you, you probably wouldn't notice. And, as I drive the car more and it adapts, it seems to smooth out.
