SL/R231: pre-facelift, adding MP3s to COMAND Music Register?

pre-facelift, adding MP3s to COMAND Music Register?
I can play MP3s from a USB-stick directly from the USB port in the center console, but am not sure how to add them to the Music Register. When playing a CD, there is an option to Record to the Music Register, but I don't see the same option when playing from the USB port.
I have been having to burn the MP3s to a CD (like it's 10-20 years ago, although I guess the car is from 10 years ago), then record from the CD, but that likely results in a loss of some sound quality and is a bit of a pain.
I'm not sure if the facelift cars are different, so wanted to clarify in the title.
