Lack of gauges

I have the base SL, and am disappointed there are no gauges, real or digital. Would like to monitor things like oil temp/pressure, boost pressure, etc. What is everyone else doing? I know your going to say get an AMG, which is probably what I will do in a a few yrs. They have them, right?

No disrespect, but I think the short answer to your question "what is everyone else doing" is...nothing.
Scroll down in this forum and find a discussion about replacing the clock with a Turbo Boost Gauge. Don't know if anyone has done it, as I'm one of the "everyones" I mentioned earlier.

I had the facelift model. Oil temp was available from ‘Comand' on the console display.

EDIT - also displayed HP & Torque.

Per the operator's manual, this feature is only available in AMG models

contact this guy if you want hassle free coding. On one dongle he can add more features like eco mode off etc at extra.
you plug into obd2 port and follow steps on nav screen.
i think i have done every possible option for coding.
amg menu, eco start off . Agility mode (which i found unneccessary) and also transmission to start in S mode (this i had to do from another source, i have a tread about it)

video is from my 14 sl550.
starts in S mode for engine and transmission and you can also see amg menu on cluster

Isn’t that absolutely insane? The hardware is there, but the factory doesn’t “code” non-AMG cars to show it. Am I missing something, or is that just plain ridiculous?

I am not sure what the oil pressure will give you though. These days where engines don't even have dip sticks anymore due to sensor-based engine monitoring, the pressure gauge somehow feels superflouos. The engine should give you messages well before you would see a drop in pressure.
Come to think of it, I didn't recall seeing oil pressure info on our AMG's. The boost gauge on the other hand provides instant feedback relative to rpm's. Very useful. indicator of engine performance/health...

Nice classic E-type interior, but the Jag actually has less gauges than the R231
The SL has oil temp vs pressure, which would be more relevant...

I fitted my first car with an oil pressure gauge, water temperature and ammeter - not sure what oil pressure told me but it looked cool.

I always started the (SL) engine and drove at low revs until the oil was up to temperature. It always amuses me to see people who sit in their car idling until the water temperature is ok and then drive the car like the rest of the moving parts are all warm. My observation is that it took 2x longer for the oil to get to the correct temperature vs the water.

I was taught to start the car and drive off (once visibility was acceptable) carefully (low revs) until the car was properly warmed up.

Where we live we are no stranger to sub zero temps (Fahrenheit, not Celsius) and I wouldn't bother waiting for the engine to warm up even then. Modern engines are designed for cold starts and start/stops, so the only time we use remote start is for us to be warm, not the engine

What car is this from? You mentioned our cars lack dipticks. My 18 SL has one

I would love to know what my oil temp is, so I know when it's ok to give it the beans. The sw solution above wouldn't be handy enough for me, as accessing that screen is a pia while driving, plus you give up the digital speedo.

The screenshot I posted is the one you have in your car and it shows the oil temp.
It’s on the Comand Screen -> Vehicle -> Dynamic Select -> Engine Data
You can leave the screen up permanently if desired.
