Trunk Top Protector

I have trouble getting the top protector to lock in the up position. Does anyone have a solution or is there an adjustment. Thanks in advance.

Isn't this the pre-facelift one? I believe the OP has a 2017 where the partition is closing electrically.

Yes, which would make it even less likely to be the part @Hornet2CV is trying to describe. (but for identification purpose visually/location wise, they’re close enough)
Maybe “top protector” is the Vario Roof/Hardtop?
I’m sure OP will confirm

this is the top protector that must be in place to operate the vario roof. When this is pushed forward it should lock in place to allow placing items items in the trunk. There are 2 clips that accept a rod on this cover. They should hold the cover up out of the way. Mine does not hold so you have to hold it with your hand while loading the trunk. Question I have is sho7ld the clips be replaced. Thanks for the help

Are your clips broken? New problem or always been an issue? I believe there is also a limit switch on one side back there too (on the facelift 2017+ cars) that could be an issue sometimes.

clips should look like this PN A23196102149051

Clips look fine but could possibly be bent from use.

Clips will either be broken or not, in which case they should be OK. Rod could bend, but doesn’t your trunk partition raise itself electronically? (2017+) -Button on left side.

I must say, feeling a bit stupid. The horizontal rod that hooks into the clips was not clipped in place so I have been doing it manually since I got the car couple of weeks ago. Clipped in and all works as designed! Many thanks! More to discover I am sure. cheers!

New problem, my wife lifted the top protector out of the bracket. When placed back in the bracket warning light is flashing and nothing will operate. Is there a way to reset?

Do you have a scanner? Check for codes, clear any codes.

I haven't tried to do anything with my scanner(s) and my Vario roof, so I don't know if there is a reset. I would make sure that the little pieces inside the clips that move and sense the protector is in place can move freely are are not broken. You know, those wives can be rough on your car. I've almost been divorced twice for telling my wife to close the car door gently.

Thanks, all pieces are in place, I unplugged and replugged the cover. Nothing was bent or broken, the top never came down. What happened, when she saw the luggage (golf clubs) would not work, she manually pushed the cover back and removed the clubs. Then when is came back down one side went into the switch and the other did not. She then hit the trunk close button and thr rest is history. Red blinking light on the cover switch and the trunk close and lock button are blank.

it is likely out of sequence and is impossible to drive with the trunk stuck up. I will disconnect the battery and if that does not work get MB to come to my house. Fortunately it is in the garage so no issues with open top and open trunk!!

Sure glad it is in the garage. Outdoors would be a real problem. Good luck with the fix.

@Hornet2CV what year is your car? (Did I miss that somewhere?) My project for tomorrow will be to use my scanner to see if there is anything that might allow rebooting or resetting the trunk. For the smart guys here, would the trunk be operated through the rear SAM?

Never mind, the rear SAM does operate the trunk.

"The rear SAM below the right rear seat cushion interacts directly with the trailer recognition control unit and with the ESP, SPS, BAS-controller. It communicates e.g. with the overhead control panel control unit via CAN. It also deals with all rear lights, closing the trunk and fasten seat belts indications; additionally it reads the tank level sensor, a tilt sensor (Anti-Theft Alarm inclination sensor), all 4 door contacts and the rear brakes sensors."

This is for the W220, so the rear SAM may be located elsewhere. But that doesn't matter to your scanner.

My thanks to everyone who reached out. Problem is solved but I don’t know how. I left to go out of town with my wife’s car (after all, she broke mine) and she was forced to either fix the SL or drive our 3rd car which is an antique Citroen 2CV. I guess she was motivated because when she got home tonight she hit the trunk close button and all worked as intended. Life is good!
