I tried to put the top down today and I can hear the motor running loudly and just the trunk opens maybe an inch and stops. I am able to get the trunk to close back down when I press the top close button. I can open and close the trunk without a problem. I am afraid to keep attempting to open the top for fear it gets stuck. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

It looks like your vehicle is a R230; this is the R231 forum.
Not sure how different the top mechanism is, but you may get more replies if you post in the R230 forum.
