Correct oil for SL550?
Morning,
I want to make sure I take an extra quart with me as I go on a 2,000 mile road trip coming up soon. I know it's Mobile 1, but is it SAE OW-40, or 5-40? I see both are listed in the owners manual but I am not sure which to buy..
The car had the 30,000 mile service before I bought it from Mercedes about a year ago, and it is saying an A3 service is due in 19 days.... which will be when I get back from the trip..
2016 SL 550 with about 33,000 miles.
Thanks,
Barry

Both are correct,
It shouldn’t matter temporarily.
Just make sure the shop uses the latest SP grade Mobil 1 when you get the oil finally changed. There is still old stock floating around.
Mercedes M278 spec is 229.5

Latest list of approved motor oils from MB: (just be sure to give it some time to let the full list load on the webpage)

Good Luck

Check out this thread as well. Maybe you'll get through the whole thing before your trip. But the Thread Starter does a good summary in the first posting. I recommend going with 5W-40 and have actually switched to Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40, API SP and MB 229.5 Approved.
