SL/R231: Steering wheels buttons not working
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what else I should try first.
With the narrative below, are there any other clues? Fuses? Resets?

BACKGROUND
I store the car for the winter with a battery tender.
In the past, the cruise control wouldn't work sometimes when I take the car out for the first time. Once the aux battery gets charged by the alternator (I assume), the cruise control function comes back.
This spring, I took the car out and drove it without any issues for more than an hour.
I parked it on a slight incline and think I forgot to put it in park before I turned it off.
When I started the car again I got the dreaded "Service Required, Do Not Shift Gears, Visit Dealer".
I tried multiple online fixes for resetting the gear shifter without success.
Towed the car and mechanic tells me Engine Control Module (ECM) needs to be changed and nothing to do with the parking on the incleine etc.
Gets fixed and works properly.
More recently I get the "Active Lane Keeping Assist Inoperative" warning and I find the buttons on the steering wheel don't work.
So I can't clear the warning when I drive and can't disable "Active Lane Keeping Assist" in the menu.
I'm really wondering if a bad auxiliary battery has been my major problem all along.
