2013 R231 drivers door lock button marred. Does a shop need to remove the door panel? Or, is this something that a layperson could do as described in the site’s installation guide?

A lay person can do it and you will not need to disassemble your door. You can use a pick to gently pry out the old button and snap in a new replacement. Make sure to pry from the inside and not from an outer angle where you risk making a tension mark. I would use thick, clear, packing tape as a layer of protection around the edges. One pick, three minutes, and brand new replacement buttons are all that is needed.
