Interesting rusted bolts under the hood on both front fenders.
Just wondering how many R231 owners note a rusted, unpainted bolt on their front fenders under the hood on each side.
I've looked at a few SL550's and some have them and some don't. Is this an issue and is it normal from the factory or is there a recall / service bulletin for replacement?
I'm suspicious and think the ones without the rusted bolt have been repaired?

Just checked my '23 C Class and yeah I found those tiny rusted bolts too, they're like the size of a grain of rice and easy to miss, any idea where you got yours from or was it something you just inspected during maintenance?
Take a magnet to the inside fender. No sticky sticky. The R231 is mostly aluminum when it comes to body parts. The only thing that is rusting is the bolt, and it looks more like simple surface rust.
The fender is aluminum and the bolt is steel. It may indicate that the bolt had been removed before, but that isn't necessarily the case. It looks like water would channel down the top of the fender during rain. A car kept outdoors might develop rust on those bolts.
There are some witness marks on the bolt on mine. There is a good chance that some body work was done on mine before I bought it. I think the Carfax at the time said there had been minor collision damage, but I can't find it now. Regardless, you could never tell.
2017 SL 550. Also, 100% Florida car. Current mileage 22,000, zero rust on any of the engine bay bolts. All bolts painted Mars Red, no marks on any of the bolts.
