I like our SL but my wife LOVES it. I traded my C7 Corvette that she DETESTED. My point is that the current SL has a small niche market of buyers and I think the new 2+2 SL will have a similar small market. If it's too small it won't be around long.
Thanks for the clarification!
The new SL will be well positioned; much better than the current ones. More upmarket, (AMG is the better selling brand), being an actual sports car and higher price will make even a niche car easily sustainable.
I'm mildly excited about the new SL, over the hardtop/soft top discussion. The only concern for me is the tesla screen, how big and how obtrusive will it be. The open air experience should be about driving and nothing else, no wiz bang tech disco ball screen. Performance and open air with a visually attractive interior that remains simple and clean. Should be an emotional experience with no flashy tech needed.

Not to mention how the screen will look with the top down and the sun reflecting off of it. Will it blind the driver or passenger sometimes? Will it become unreadable at times?
Some sources on social media are claiming an August 12th unveiling at Pebble Beach for the R232.
Saw the same info. Which makes sense as SL's are usually intro'd in the US.
I think this will be a great looking SL and am curious how see how it will compare to our AMG GTC. That car is just so nimble; nothing in the MB lineup compares at this point...

I'm also excited, especially since AMG will be at the helm this time. Patiently waiting for specs, pictures, leaks, anything at this point. All the photos I've seen of the car look great though, looks like it will take some aspects of the GT as well as the W223.

Absolutely! Really, Mercedes? Will the new SL have this? Seems like the new GLC will have this. For me this screen, particularly in a convertible, is a serious negative for any vehicle. Not only is it obnoxious in appearance, it requires the driver to look away from the road ahead as in the attached photo from an S-class. I hope that Mercedes will stick with the large dual screens as in my CLS53. That dash design is excellent.

I had a 2002 Lexus SC430 with the retractable hardtop. It had a touch screen built into the dash, but it had an electric TILT feature, so you could adjust it if the sun was causing a bad reflection. Looks like Lexus may have been way ahead of their time with that feature. I wonder if the new SL screen will tilt?
Looks like yet another beautiful, luxury GT car with a FABRIC top. Porsche, Lexus, Bentley, Audi, BMW, Maserati, etc. They all have fabric tops. Pretty much only MB and Ferrari did the high end, retractable hard top. It was a very exclusive club. MB should have remained a member and simply upped their game. Oh well.

Why can't MB just integrate the hyper screen from the EQS? At least that has has design language. Anything is better than this disaster.
I cannot separate how I perceive the similarities between these sneak previews of the new SL and the current BMW Z4. Proportionally they just have so much overlay IMO; will be most interested when the final specs are announced to compare the two.

I tend to agree but I'm guessing the Merc will be at least 10-12" longer to accommodate the rear seat, albeit a small one. The Z4 is a true roadster with only seating for 2. I believe Toyota is going to race their version of the Z4 AKA Supra, since it is a hardtop.

It'll cost 2-3 times as much as the Z4. Potentially as much as 4 for the SL73e.
At this point I think it's a less extreme version of the GT roadster. They have done a fantastic job hiding a 2+2 config as the cabin size looks roughly equivalent to the current SL but somewhat larger than the AMG GT. I like that the soft top has the same shape of the hardtop (2 side windows) although the rear window is rather small...
