The SL has also always been heavier than a 911 for decades, the AMG GT though is closer to the 911's weight, although still a bit heavier.
Hmm. If memory serves, the 992 911 Turbo S cab is a touch heavier than our AMG GTC roadster.

Maybe it is just me, but everything I have ever read about the SL in my life until this year said that SL stood for Sport Leicht. With the introduction of the r232 last year, many of the journalists are now saying Super Leicht. Is Mercedes for some reason trying to re-write history here or has anyone ever heard of "Super Leicht" until last year?

AMS, a German Car Mag, found an original press release from 1952 in the archives confirming the phrase Super Leicht (March 2021)

Wow - thanks for the press release! I find it bizarre that Mercedes somehow missed this or let is slide all these years without correcting it. I just spent a few minuties googleing this, and it is clearly a recent discovery in the archives.

Super-Leicht it is! To be super pedantic, we need to start hyphenating it as well.

I’m sure the R232 will have much to like, but to those of us who have driven SL’s for decades—my first was a 1972 and I’ve owned eight—this new car is not worthy of the legacy, it’s yet another huge compromise.
Well either way there wasn't enough of you guys around to keep the old theme going, that's the point. The car had become a boulevarder and that isn't what the SL was from the start. The old car was a compromise, every car is, you just liked the compromises of the R231.

They didn't address it because nether Super or Sport Light truly described the SL for a years now.

That can be said for many model designations. Not that the 55, 63 or any other engine designation stands for engine size anymore.
Or the Turbo on the Taycan. These are just brand labels…

The new suspension set up is mind boggling. I have never adapted the individual setting more than in the new SL, and I have seat time in LOTS of AMG cars. It can comfortably soak up rough back roads at a spirited speed and an hour later give a rock solid feel on a race track that allows you to feel the pebble you hit on the apex of the last turn.
Were you able to extensively sample the standard SL55 suspension vs the optional hydraulic setup? So far disappointed that none of the reviews I have watched or read address this. Seems like those that drove the SL63 found it on the firm side, whereas the SL55 is more comfortable. Do you agree?

I was talking about whether it was Sport or Super light, not engines.

I do agree. For those who are a fan of the current SL will feel right at home in the 55. It has a more compliant suspension feel in comfort but really does tighten up when put into sport and sport+. I had the opportunity to sample around 8 SLs in different configurations.
