Trunk not opening or closing

I haven't had battery issues for months since I started using a battery maintainer and always double-click locking the car. I mention this because battery issues seem to cause myriad problems with the car, but I don't think that it caused this problem: today, when I popped the trunk release switch, it unlocked, but didn't open. I was able to haul it up with some effort -- I was picking someone up at the airport and needed the trunk open -- and then pushed it down with equal effort, and, finally, with more effort, engaging the lock. When using the driver's door release or the fob button, the trunk unlatches, but doesn't move.

Anyone else experienced this please? Of course, I'll call my dealer in the morning. Thanks!

Hmm. After leaving the car in my garage overnight, the trunk lid started working again. This behavior is all too common on modern cars, i.e."leave it locked for some time and it will start working again". I've experienced it on Mercedes, Porsche, and McLaren cars in the past couple of years. It seems to be a symptom of literally hundreds of hardware "modules" programmed by dozens of companies all communicating on the ancient CANBUS with race conditions, unpredictable recovery modes and, worse, firmware updates without checkpointing and rollback "bricking" some modules.

At my dealership they talk about letting the car "CAN down" to reset the various systems. Flying Bear is totally correct with the hodgepodge of systems from different manufacturers and programmers.

In case others have the same problem:

My intermittent trunk opening/closing failure was caused by a faulty microswitch in the trunk latch. That microswitch signals the trunk open/close function. Kudos to Mercedes of Durham NC for tracking this down; intermittent failures are a bear to diagnose.
