RENNtech exhaust caution

Greetings,

Thought I would share my experience after having recently installed a RENNtech exhaust (https://www.renntechmercedes.com/ind...232-192-detail) after 1.5 years of 2023 SL63 ownership. I think we all appreciate the aggressiveness of the stock exhaust, I was looking forward to a more aggressive experience with this mod. After a week’s time, I categorize this move as a downgrade.

My (non-RENNtech) tech tells me that the new exhaust is louder. We all know there are few R232 SL63s on the road and even fewer that are modified, so I question this assertion given that I have had a reasonable amount of seat time, but OK . . . The new exhaust might be SLIGHTLY louder. We (all) enjoy the pops and bangs of the overrun (I know it’s juvenile, but I like it anyway); I exchanged some emails with RENNtech and they explained that these mini-explosions are caused by unburnt fuel hitting the converter and the exhausts do not play a role. This is probably very true, I am not in the auto industry, so I take this at face value. All I can say is that the pops and bangs are 10% of what they were before the mod, so if you are considering this exhaust, I suggest that you hear it in person before pulling the trigger. I wish I did— KH

Wow!!! Thanks for feedback and sorry the mod wasn't what you were hoping for. Don't apologize for loving the pops and bangs!! It's why you bought an SL63 vs a Bentley or something like that. AMG historically has been the choice for those of us who want to indulge the inner 10 year old!

So what are you gonna do? Return? What options are there for this car? I know Akrapovic made some proper exhausts for otherwise typically muted Audis and I was close to splurging on one before deciding to get out of the Audi into my old E63. Not sure if they have a product for Mercedes? The SL is my 4th AMG, with 3 of those being on the 4.0tt M177. The first one, a '17 GLE63s had the M157, a 5.5tt and that OEM performance exhaust sounds like the god of thunder is barking behind you. None of the others matched that character, which is expected since it's a different engine all together. It was definitely the loudest too.

Thanks for the question, at this point I hate to throw good money after bad . . . I left the stock cans at my shop and I’m sure they are tossed by now (didn’t check). I think I will just leave it well enough alone. While this is my first SL, my last car was a 2019 Aston Martin Vantage, which also has a M177 engine, the stock exhaust on that was quite good and I upgraded it to a Velocity AP exhaust (also few options) and I was nothing but thrilled. Was expecting a similar experience, KH
