Antenna Issue

I have a 1986 560SL and recently the antenna for the radio hasn't been working. We looked into it and the fuse was blown. Simple. However when I replaced it, it blew again, and again. I took it to the mechanic and he said there was some issue inside the antenna and it'd cost around $2k to fix it.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Any ideas?

Taking You for a Ride

Unbelievable!

The antenna can be had (aftermarket) complete for under $50 and the labor time is 15 minutes including a smoke break!

OEM (Hirschman) antenna is a couple hundred dollars last time I checked and not worth it unless you're trying to win a concours... and still only 15 minutes to replace.

Who is this mechanic (let us know so we don't go there!)?

Kevin

The shop was Classic Collision in Roswell/Alpharetta GA.

Could the antenna alone cause the short like that, or might I need the wiring or some other things to go with it? Also where can I buy it? (I'm kinda new to the merc world.)

On my 190e, i bought the ENTIRE POWER ANT unit, (motor, ant, wires) off of ebay for 30 bucks. Fit perfectly fine. Only issue is that the ant is either completely up or down.

Works automatically and with the switch.

I have the same recurrent fuse issue with an 87 560sl. Fuse #12 controls the antenna, radio and interior lights. The fuse keeps blowing. What is the likely cause of this problem?
