Broken Timing Chain Guide

I have a 1975 450SL with a broken passenger side upper timing chain guide rail. My chain is really stretched out to the point it will touch the wall of the head. It will deflect that far. Could this be the tensioner? It slapped against the guide and broke it off, maybe the top inch or so. My question is, I dont see the broken piece anywhere.....I assume it fell down in? Any way to get it out without taking the timing cover off? Thankfully the car was not run very far after the noise started. Any help would be appreciated!
