SL/R107: 380SL parts and diagnosis needed

380SL parts and diagnosis needed
My friend's 380SL has intermittent hunting whether hot or cold. He spent $800 on it with a local idiot because the Benz dealers here won't work on 1980s cars except to change tires...
I need advice: should I just go through all the vacuum hoses? Check the gaskets with a little bit of carb cleaner or ether?
ALSO -- PARTS needed. The 380SL top has a chrome cap behind the front seats. The special tool for the front (the flat tool) hooks into this round cap in order to open the rear spring loaded pins holding the back of the hard top. I need at least one of these caps for my friend's car. He is not computer literate so he cannot ask.

Try www.adsitco.com. You should call them and describe the part. I have used them in the past and they ship fast. I have owned quite a few w107 over the years, and have placed many orders with them.
