dash Temperature sensor 380SL

I am looking at the temp sensor that goes up through the dash, it snaps into into a plastic piece that looks like a hose should be attached to it but there is nothing there....what is missing??????

There was a foam hose that went from from the top of the dash to an obvious fitting below it. It often has disappeared, but can be replaced with a piece of foam pipe insulation, IIRC, for 1/2" tubing.

Thanks, I thought it was something like that, I did not find any pictures or diagrams.....I have a piece of 5/8 ID hose that fits so I can just hook it up to the inlet pipe that was just sitting there
