SL/R107: Engine surge when slowing down

Engine surge when slowing down
I've read about this somewhere and now my car does it. When slowing down off the freeway, the engine surges- increases RPM about 2k for a split second. What causes this and should I be concerned. Car is a 1986 560 sl with 74K miles.

No, my cruise does not work. Don't use it anyway so don't feel like spending several hundred to fix the cruise.
When this surging occurs, I'm just slowing down on the exit ramp of the freeway.

at what RPM does the engine surge? 560's are known for having an issue around 1500 rpm's...
