Bogus V.I.N. #?

Hello All,

My name is Steve and I am new to this site. I have a V.I.N. problem that I was wondering whether anyone might be able to help me with.

I was trying to verify the color scheme on a 1982 280 SL to make sure it is correct and found what appears to be a bogus V.I.N. number assigned to the car.

This SL was imported into the states as a gray market car some time ago and I need to verify if this is the correct V.I.N. number or not.

It is: WDB10704212013423. From what I can ascertain, it is coming up as a 2003. Can someone help or guide me on this.

Sincerely,
Steve.

Steve, the WDB (Identifies the manufacturer as Daimler Benz and that you have a car, not some other type vehicle) was added to give you a 17 digit VIN that meets federal standards since 1981. The rest of the number is the original which will be stamped on the body by the hood latch. I checked and yours having a 107042 chassis comes up as a 280SL so I'll assume the rest is legit. Last 6 digits are the serial number, and the center digits are likely the transmission type and a check bit. Your paint code is also under the hood on the datacard that is a steel plate on the other side of the the hood latch; all the option codes for your car are on the plate. You can google the numbers for the datacard to find your paint color. Typical options on these cars were electric windows, first aid kit, and other items that may be common to all the 280SL's destined for the original country of sale.

Don,
From one Ohioian to another...thanks a million for your help and information! My whole quest with this V.I.N.# started with my trying to do a data code search for the paint codes to verify whether this car had been repainted in its original color or not.

The only site that popped up on Google search was MBWorld. I couldn't seem to find a place within the site that supported that info. Do you have any particular sites that you specifically use? I truly appreciate your assistance!

Sincerely,
Steve.
