SL/R107: 450SL ECU problem?

450SL ECU problem?
I have a 1972 450SL with a recently rebuilt engine, so I'm confident all the ignition, timing, and fuel issues are OK. It runs A-OK at upper RPMs, but at anything under 1500-2000 RPMs, the #4 and #8 fuel injectors fail to activate. My mechanic tells me he "suspects" the ECU since everything else looks OK. He says the only way to know for sure is with a replacement ECU computer. Of course they are near impossible to find, and so far I have not found a good source to try a rebuild. I'm curious if there are any testing procedures that might help me verify the ECU failure? I hate to spend another several hundred dollars on a solution (assuming I can find one) that does not resolve my problem. Any advice appreciated.
