Looking at 1980 450SL is it worth it?
I'm looking at a 1980 450SL that is for sale in my neighborhood. Black with Tobacco interior.
I saw the car yesterday. It has been sitting for past 10 years. Odometer is not working, seller says approximately 170,000 miles. The car does run.
Body work is in good condition; no visible signs of major repairs. No rust under the doors. No rust in the spare tire well. Some minor rust on the hood and under the 450SL emblem. No rust underneath at floor boards. Some small dings, here and there etc.. Interior OK condition. Dashboard has a few cracks.
I am a competent mechanic, and I would be able rebuild the motor and transmission, etc... myself. I have the equipment and the space. I am also going to take an evening class in auto-body repair/paint at the local tech school. It would be project that would run for a few years.
The question is, should I do it. Would it be worth it? Are parts easily source-able? The asking price is under $3,000.
Or would it be an endless money pit since it's a German car?
Is this a desirable year, color?

Probably is a money pit but if you can do a lot of the work yourself, your cost is oar S and your time. It is a cool car, and if I knew I could do the work I would probably take the chance

ive restored vehicles before and done a lot of the work myself. It is enjoyable but theyre all a money pit not matter what unless everything is in perfect condition
