SL/R107: trans clicking

trans clicking
ok so all of a sudden my 82 380sl transmission clicks when i shift to reverse or drive.
it usually stops clicking when the gear engages, i say usually because sometimes the clicking continues even after drive engages but stops a few seconds later
when i shift to reverse the clicking stops as soon as it engages
otherwise shifts perfect with no slipping or flaring
reverse is a little slow to engage like 2 seconds but other cars i had (84 sd, 83d and 94 300sd ) all exhibited this behavior.
please tell me i am not facing a rebuild
oh the car has 105,000 miles and when i did a trans fluid change last year the pan was spotless and no burnt smell with bright red fluid.
the fluid remains bright red with no burnt smell.
i used dex VI
less than 1000 miles on new fluid and filter and yes i did the torque converter drain also
