560 SL - 1985
1985 560SL Questions VIN etc

How do I decode the VIN - WDB1070411A038739 ? the decoder on this site doesn't recognize it

It has a clean CARFAX report

The current owner says it has a "Grey" Title....but it is registered. Not sure what that means?

What is a fair price to pay for this model. garaged its whole life and has about 48K Grey with black top

*******************
It's currently titled in MO or KS.....Do you know if I will be Abel to get it titled in California? with the smog requirements?

107 041 is an inline 6 300SL not V/8 560SL. It is not a US standardized VIN so many decoders will not recognize it. Contact Mercedes for the data card. There is a plastic cap where the foot of the jack mounts. Remove it and there may be a build sheet with codes. There is also a metal plate with the build codes screwed to the radiator support.

Grey title is grey market vehicle meaning it was not marketed by MBUSA. It is a Euro or ROTW 107 which supposedly was brought in legally and updated to US standards..

So what happened? A 300SL here in the USA would be worth more than a comparable 560SL in my opinion. As a side note the only way either a 300SL or 560SL would be a 1985 model year is if it was titled in a country that goes by date of manufacture. They both started production 9/85. All North American 560SLs were designated 1986 models. My 1986 built 10/85 is titled as a 1986.

I seriously doubt it will pass California's strict testing. Kansas does not require emissions testing. Missouri only requires emissions testing in St. Louis and surrounding counties.
If you decide not to buy why not pass the seller info. along. Someone might be interested.
