450 SL cold start issue
Hello,
I have a 79 450 SL that I was gifted. I’m very new to auto mechanics, but have been working on this car a bit lately.
when I got the car it fired up every tine, ran but ran like **** and got hot.
I replaced the thermostat, it fired right up and I drove it to check the temperature. Temp was pinned at 175ish and didn’t get hot.
the next day it would crank and crank but never start. This led me down a crazy (For me) path and the following is what I have done.
replaced the fuel pump and filter, replaced the battery and distributor cap and rotor and set the ignition timing to TDC.
I can get it to start and run but in order to do so I have to advance the distributor considerably and then move it back once it has warmed up.
wondering if anyone has had this problem or has a good place to start in addressing it. Thanks for your patience, like I said I’m really new to this, the most I’ve ever done to a car prior to this is fill it with gas.
