Headlight Low Beams Do Not Work

Hi, All! I'm taking a few days off work to get caught up on chores and take a break from "work". First thing - fix a few of the minor problems with my Teutonic Tomato (1987 560SL).

When I turn on the headlights and switch the High Beams on, all four lights come on. But, when I switch to Low Beam, all four lights turn off (the Low Beams do not stay on.

Any ideas on what might be causing this problem? Whats the first thing to troubleshoot? Thanks!

I checked the voltage to the Low Beam headlight (results below) and verified that the Low Beams were not receiving any volts when the Headlight switch on the steering column is set to Low Beam. Next, I'll search this forum to see if I can find a listing and location of any Relays that control the Headlights. That will be tomorrow's chore. (work my way back from the Headlights until I can find where there is no voltage flowing forward to the Headlights).

If anyone has any ideas or advice, please let me know.

Checked the voltage to the Low Beam connector:

1. With Light Switch set to High Beam, there is DC current (11.4 volts) to the White & Brown (Red?) Connectors.
2. With Light Switch set to High Beam, there is DC current (10.9 volts) to the White and Yellow Connectors.
3. With the Light Switch set to Low Beam, there is only residual voltage (0.19 volts) to the White & Yellow Connectors.
4. With the Light Switch set to Low Beam, there is not any volts to the White & Brown Connectors.

Brown is ground.. Check continuity between brown and body.body. Check for voltage to the wires with black probe connected to brown

I purchased a new Combination Switch from AutohausAZ. I'm hoping that will fix the problem. Plan to install tomorrow, so we'll know soon enough.

I replaced the Combination Switch and it fixed the Low Beam issue. Now they both come on, so it was a faulty Combo Switch. From reading the other articles about other peoples problems - "left side headlights not working", "both turn signals not working", "Left (or Right) turn signal not working" - It seems there's no "one thing" that goes wrong with the Comb Switch. It makes me wonder if the problems people have with the Switches are more from how people "abuse" or over-work the Switch. For example, someone might be hard on the Switch when they turn it to "Left Turn Signal" verses setting the Switch to "Right Turn Signal" and over time the Switch wears out on the "Left Turn Signal" setting.... anyway, just thoughts from the "*****house Mechanic".
