How to replace front pads on 1981 380SL ??

Need to replace the front pads (first time) and see that I am suppose to "loosen" the 4 bolts on the back of the cailpher. Is that correct ? What does it do ?
Normally (on W210 W124 W203 etc....) I would just push the pistons back far enough to remove the old pad.
